Your Next Step in Yoga?

Whether you’ve been going to Yoga classes for some time or you are starting out but things don’t feel quite right, you might be wondering what could be next for you.

Whether you want to deepen your understanding, find a practice that is better suited to you or find a practice with more intensity, the path ahead might not be obvious.

How do you know you are ready to take the next step?

You are ready to take the next step when you start wondering about:

the ‘mystery’ of how Yoga classes are put together

how you could best adjust poses for your body

which poses are good for what or how you could stretch or strengthen a particular body part

how you could advance your practice

finding a solution to a health problem

how to build a healthy routine, or to work on your body and mind on a deeper level.

Options to advance:

Yoga studio classes

✔️ generally affordable

❌generally not designed for personal advancement

❌can’t always get your questions answered

➡️ Try out classes with different teachers and then ask your favorite one for a private session. Even if the teacher can’t do a long term commitment, you might get your most pressings questions answered that way.

Online subscriptions

✔️affordable and great variety

❌no feedback from teacher

❌overwhelm of options

❌ no one to hold you accountable

➡️ If you look beyond the major platforms, you’ll find a lot o great Yoga teachers who are dedicated to what they sell. They might have a way already set up for you to submit your questions or even a 1:1 program that let’s you work with them in a more affordable way.

Private Classes

✔️ Individualized focus on what you want to develop

❌Cost; might take a while to find a teacher who is happy to ‘teach’ not just guide through Yoga sessions

➡️ Even if it’s just one class you can invest in for now, it’s worth getting your questions answered.

Yoga Teacher Trainings

✔️ Will help your understanding of Yoga

❌Expensive, requires a lot of time, doesn’t always meet you where you are

➡️ Don’t rush selecting a Yoga Teacher Training and never book one without speaking to a graduate of the program.

Yoga workshops

✔️Most commonly address a particular issue

❌Don’t offer continuous support

➡️ Lots of Yoga teachers offer online workshops for free as entry points to their higher ticket programs. It’s a good way to meet potential teachers you could eventually study with.

Online Courses

✔️ Offer flexibility

✔️budget-friendly

✔️offer community and people to hold you accountable

❌Don’t always offer feedback and Q+A time

➡️ Online Yoga courses are a great solution to several problems - affordability, accessibility as well as providing a motivational and supportive environment. As with in person trainings, shop around and make sure the course has all the elements you are looking for.

Don’t give up!

Today’s model of Yoga education is fairly mismatched and quite confusing. Yoga classes are not really ‘classes’ - they don’t teach you, they just guide you, and Yoga Teacher Trainings more often than not aren’t really designed to produce teachers.

Taking the next step with Yoga might translate into taking the next step in your life.

So even though it can be challenging to search for ways to learn and advance, don’t give up on your search, the answers are out there.
